A town gets behind its team

If it were possible to be in two places at once, I sure would have liked to be at both Wembley and Wigan town centre when the Latics won the FA Cup.

Being at the game was, of course, an opportunity not to be missed. But judging from the lack of beverages available in Wigan’s pubs that night and the next day, it must have been a hell of a party. And so it was, according to the people we talked to.

Everyone was eager to talk to us once they found we had travelled from Toronto just to attend the game, including a pair of rugby supporters who thought we were fools to be soccer fans. “Wigan’s a rugby town, and always will be,” said one of them at the takeout kebob place where, bleary-eyed, we stopped for a late-night bite to eat before heading to the hotel. We tried the old “why can we all just get along?” line on them, but they were having none of it.

In any event, here are some shots of the town and the team sendoff at Wigan’s North Western station as they boarded the train for London.
